Making Home Safer
As we age, the home environment can present new challenges. This room-by-room checklist will help you identify and address potential safety concerns so your loved one can continue living independently with confidence.
General (All Rooms)
- [ ] Adequate lighting in all areas, especially hallways and stairs
- [ ] Night lights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways
- [ ] Electrical cords tucked away from walking paths
- [ ] Non-slip rugs or rugs removed entirely
- [ ] Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors installed and tested
- [ ] Emergency contact numbers posted visibly
- [ ] Clear, uncluttered walking paths
Bathroom
- [ ] Grab bars installed near toilet and in shower/tub
- [ ] Non-slip mat or adhesive strips in shower/tub
- [ ] Raised toilet seat if needed
- [ ] Shower chair or bench available
- [ ] Handheld shower head installed
- [ ] Water heater set below 120°F to prevent scalding
- [ ] Medications stored safely and organized
Bedroom
- [ ] Bed at appropriate height (easy to get in and out)
- [ ] Nightstand within arm's reach with lamp and phone
- [ ] Clear path from bed to bathroom
- [ ] Adequate closet accessibility (lower rods if needed)
- [ ] Medical alert device within reach at night
Kitchen
- [ ] Frequently used items stored at waist-to-shoulder height
- [ ] Step stool avoided — move items to accessible locations
- [ ] Automatic shut-off on stove/oven
- [ ] Fire extinguisher accessible and current
- [ ] Non-slip flooring
- [ ] Good lighting over food prep areas
Living Areas
- [ ] Sturdy furniture that can support leaning or sitting
- [ ] Remote controls for lights and entertainment
- [ ] Phone or medical alert device within reach
- [ ] Clear pathways between furniture
Entryway & Stairs
- [ ] Handrails on both sides of stairs
- [ ] Non-slip treads on steps
- [ ] Well-lit entry and porch area
- [ ] Ramp available if steps are difficult
- [ ] Secure deadbolt locks accessible from inside
- [ ] Doorbell and intercom system if applicable
Outdoors
- [ ] Even, well-maintained walkways
- [ ] Adequate outdoor lighting
- [ ] Handrails on outdoor steps
- [ ] Garden hoses and tools stored safely
